Interschools favours the underdog!

The u/14D hockey team could not, when they did their routine warm-up, have suspected that the gods would smile on them as they did. But… they could have suspected something special was heading their way when the GHS dancers walked on the Astro to open the days events. Boy! Did they heat up the floor being the symbol of teamwork and synchronization.

Our Grade 8s, reciprocated and made us so proud today! They showed strength and perseverance. One could feel the passion and excitement on the field this afternoon. Those who were not playing were cheering their friends on, loud and proud they sang on the pavilions without any GK to lead them or anyone asking. They did it because they wanted to, not because
they had to.

The team played against Paarl Gimnasium's u/14 C team and showed that they truly don't back down from a challenge. They were told to “play together” and they sure did. Within the last 13 seconds of the first half they scored their second goal, in the end they won their match 4 - 0. The crowd went wild as all the grade 8 spectators came running to the field to give their winning team a proper send off. Everyone created a long tunnel where each and every team member ran through as they cheered on.

Coach Liesl Stevens was very proud of her team and we expressed similar feelings about watching the game, that it was a special and wholesome experience to witness. It was wonderful to see such a strong bond within a grade. They were definitely living Larger and Higher.

Die volgende skuif is julle s'n.. . Ons Laerskool het Vrydag, 22 Julie, uitgehaal en gewys. Hulle gees en entoesiasme vir die Interskole skaak kon nie weggesteek word nie. Hulle het Gimnasium ingelei tot die Girls' High manier van dinge doen toe hulle hul met selfs koninginne verwelkom het. Dit is die eerste keer in 'n hele aantal jare wat Girls' High weer die laerskool interskole skaak aangebied het en ons het dit met styl gedoen. Dit was grotendeels vir ons spelers 'n kans om te groei en ontwikkel in hul skaak vernuf. Die A-span het gelykop gespeel met drie wenne elk, maar ons B-span het ongelukkig verloor. Ag, natuurlik as jy nog klein is en vir jou opponent oor 'n swart-en-wit bord moet loer, voel jy geïntimideerd en bang dat jy sal verloor. As dit wel gebeur is jou hartjie, maar so bietjie seer. Gelukkig is troos naby in die drukkies van 'n maatjie of Mevrou Van Zyl wat haar oor al haar kinders ontferm. Wen of verloor, sê Mevrou Annalize Strangfel

The Roof, the roof, the roof is on fire.. . The PGHS Primary School is taking the lead and warming up the playground for interschools. Today they had a sing-song session. If you are ten or eleven you need not be invited to enjoy the moment and let yourself be one with the crowd and the spirit of something you do not yet understand the seriousness of. If you are ten or eleven you can just be... be swept up, be present and be joyful.

A last hurrah to Interschools 2022 Let's give the last hurrah to Interschools 2022! It was a sports festival packed with action, emotion, and colour. The weather also made itself a player in the game. The spirit of Interschools was revived this year with two (three) top-notch schools competing to trump each other on the day. Spectators got spoiled with a display of skill, strength, grit, and resilience often missing from national and international games. As school communities, we can be proud of the spirit with which we approached the event. One had the feeling that prior to 2020 the school community became blasé about the event. They forgot that they are dealing with children. The crowds were aggressive and rude to players. This year words of encouragement and appreciation were heard in abundance.
